Market caps: NASDAQ, NYSE and NYSE American listings as of 8 October 2026. A company is valued from its shares only, and share classes of one company count once. 4,063 companies have a head office in the United States. 1,272 listed firms with an address abroad are left out. Head office: the business address each company files with the SEC, matched to a county by ZIP code. Each county's companies sit at the point where its residents are centred. A square exists where at least 30% of it is US land or somebody lives in it, and belongs to the state covering most of it. People are counted where they live: the 2020 census counts of every census block group (about 240,000 of them), added up per square and scaled to each county's 2024 estimate. A square is named after the area most of its residents belong to. Alaska and Hawaii are off the map and out of the bars: 8 companies worth $16.1B. Data: Nasdaq listings, SEC EDGAR, US Census Bureau.
